L’esame della grafia costituiva uno degli strumenti diagnostici utilizzati per osservare possibili disturbi psichici. Sebbene i disturbi della scrittura potessero essere considerati indicatori di malattia mentale, la grafologia non veniva ritenuta un metodo sufficientemente valido per produrre osservazioni scientifiche. Tuttavia alcuni psichiatri iniziarono a studiare il processo della scrittura come fenomeno sperimentale. Emil Kraepelin sviluppò uno strumento denominato “Writing-Scale”, che permetteva di misurare diversi parametri della dinamica scrittoria, in particolare la pressione dei movimenti. Gli esperimenti produssero una grande quantità di dati, difficili però da interpretare in modo coerente.
